The debut EP from Captain Handsome, I Am Not An Animal, is released digitally and on limited edition CD today.
The solo project of Lily Rae, also of Fightmilk, takes influence from Mitski, Dolly Parton, and Kirsty MacColl to form a collection of intimate and introspective sad pop bangers.
Premiering first single I Wish I Had A Dog For The Rabbits, who also named Captain Handsome as a 2020 artist to keep an eye on, described it as, “simultaneously delightfully straight-forward and winningly, just the right amount of weird” while Get In Her Ears said it was, “a slice of effervescent indie-pop that tugs at the heartstrings in all the right ways”.
Getting plenty of support from Chris Hawkins at 6Music as well as across online publications, Small Music Scene said, “a fantastic record here that is not only well produced and vividly diverse in style, but elevated by a pure, no-nonsense legitimacy that allows her to make a lasting impression on the audience.”
Blog Earthly Pleasures summed up the EP when writing about second single Halloween, as, “an ode to the awkwardness of ones early to mid-twenties, and the nightmare of falling short of the social savoir-vivre when you really should know better”
Sarah Lay, co-founder of Reckless Yes said, “These tracks resonate deeply with anyone who’s ever spent a little too long in their own head, and found both comfort and fear in that place. Brilliantly melodic and lyrically incisive we’ll be giving full details of the release soon.”
Pete Darrington, co-founder of Reckless Yes said, “With this EP you should be prepared for something sparse and totally beautiful. While her savage observational millennial wit is still ever present this is also equal parts Dolly Parton, Joni Mitchell and Taylor Swift.”
