Experimental noise rock duo Paper Birch are the first of a host of bands being announced onto the label’s roster before the end of the year.
A collaborative project between Fergus Lawrie, of Urusei Yatsura, and Dee Sada of Albini-produced An Experiment On A Bird In An Air Pump, their sound blends shoegaze, dissonance, and experimental but melodic refrains.
Getting together at a distance in 2020 the pair created debut album MORNINGHAIRWATER in lockdown, and gave it a limited digital download release through Cafe Oto imprint TakuRoku. Now signed to Reckless Yes the album will get a full release across vinyl, CD, and digital in 2021.
On joining Reckless Yes Paper Birch said, “We’re really excited to work with a label that has inclusion and sustainability at its heart and comes from a place of real passion and support for its artists and fans. Reckless Yes is the perfect home for our album, MORNINGHAIRWATER. Here’s to 2021!”
Reckless Yes co-founder Sarah Lay said, “As soon as I heard this album I fell in love with it, and knew Pete would love it just as much. With such an arty noise rock heritage running through both Dee and Fergus there’s no surprise – but plenty of delight – at the crunch and edge to the guitars matched to softer melody, and the spiralling refrains.
“Shoegazey, indiepoppish, noise rocking this album draws not only on the influence on both artist’s own back catalogues but which at times echoes with everything from Heavenly to Joy Division. It’s an absolute belter of a record and we know you’re going to love it just as much as we do.”
Pete Darrington, co-founder of Reckless Yes, said, “I feel both excited and privileged to have the opportunity to work with Paper Birch. Not only do we get the sonic genius that is Fergus Lawrie of Urusei Yatsura, but also the incredibly imaginative talents of multi-instrumentalist Dee Sada of so many ridiculously cool projects over the last 10 years, starting with An Experiment On A Bird In The Air Pump and ending with NEUMES.
“It’s like the planets have aligned with this album as together they’ve created a multilayered musical landscape that is hauntingly beautiful that I can’t wait for you to hear.”
