It seems only a hot minute since we released the first single from Look Up but here we go – time for another! The next single from Mark Morriss’ fourth solo album will be The Beans, set for digital release on 23 August 2019.
The track – which Mark says melodically as if XTC and Elvis Costello were practicing in adjoining rooms with paper thin walls – is heartbreaker wrapped as a catchy bop. A masterclass of a pop song, it does what the best of this genre achieve: juxtaposing melancholy tales with upbeat melody. The hook will get you first but you’ll sink into the lyrics dealing with an unhealthy relationship with a surface of sharp snark giving way to a depth of devastation.
Featuring the track Traveller’s Tunes said is was an instant classic, “Morriss’ lyrics are so often overlooked but, no one deals with relationships better. This, a seriously troubled one (“who cares / if you throw me down stairs”) is negated with so much humour it’s only the XTC via west coast ’70s solo that brings home that this is a personal experience.”
