With alarming speed we have found ourselves at Listen Friday once again – and this week Sarah and Pete have handed over the power and responsibility to Phil Burgess, a recent associate to Reckless Yes but a promoter, artist and human we’ve long been a big fan of. And it’s his birthday today – it’s a mutual treat to have him curate in celebration! Happy Birthday Phil!!!

Here’s Phil, with the music…
When I was asked by Reckless Yes to put together six songs to share with their audience on my birthday I jumped at the chance. I love sharing music!
Given the brief of five newish tracks and one classic I chose to interpret newish as within the last five years or so because rock n’ roll is timeless, right?
So please listen and enjoy as much as I have enjoyed putting this together. Even better if you have enjoyed, go and show the bands some love and buy their records. The underground scene will always stay alive as long as people like us support it.
If you don’t like my selection, hell! It’s my party and I’ll damn well cry if I want to.
Listen Friday – 10 February 2017
NoBunny – Nightmare Night
Raw garage punk rock fronted by a half naked leather clad guy in a bunny mask. What’s not to like? Surely there is something for everyone right there.
This track comes from the LP ‘Secret Songs’ released on one of the most exciting record labels around Goner Records (home of King Khan & BBQ Show, Jay Reatard, Ty Segal etc).
Guantanamo Baywatch – Love This Time
Surf infused lo-fi garage punk from Portland Oregon. It is quite easy to imagine Guantanamo Baywatch as the house band at Arnold’s Diner in Happy Days, a band that have clearly grown up listening to The Sonics.
Hunx & His Punx – You Think You’re Tough
Sassy bubblegum punk from California. Unfortunately this band are gone but their sex appeal will never be forgotten. Members have gone on to perform under the extravagant Seth Bogart and the incredible Shannon & The Clams. Hell just leave any manliness and intolerance at the door and go check out all the bands, they are all truly magnificent.
Table Scraps – Motorcycle (Straight to Hell)
Noisy fuzz ladened garage punk from Birmingham. Their debut album is 35 mins of raw punk to smash your TV set to.
Bivouac – Sweet Heart Deal
Growing up in Derby in the ’90s made me fall in love with this band. A band from my hometown who were hobnobbing with the likes of Nirvana and The Jesus Lizard was just mind blowing for the teenage me. When the band reformed and released a new single last year I was in heaven, it was a day that I thought I would never see. To this day it is up there as one of my favourite shows I have ever worked on.
The Vaselines – You Think You’re A Man
As with most people my age The Vaselines came onto our radars due to the multiple times they were covered by Nirvana. This however was not a bad thing. When I searched out who this band actually were and got further in than the aforementioned covers I soon realised why they were held in such high regard. The Vaselines are timeless stars whose songs never grow old.
If you’re in Derby tonight get down to the Hairy Dog where Phil is hosting a Dirty Fingers presents gig with Unqualified Nurse Band, Table Scraps and Crime Wolf.
