Following on from recent single Hopelessness, Derby-based dreampop band Grawl!x has followed with single Nine Ladies. The track is also taken from forthcoming EP Spring.
About the track songwriter Maria Michael Machin said, “I wrote this shortly after going up to the Nine ladies site for a friend’s birthday. It’s a stone circle in the Peak District which has been a place of pagan worship for thousands of years. It was just a really heartening opportunity to be humbled by nature and be reminded of the grand scheme of things – which nature is essential for given how wrapped up in things I can get.
“That’s what nature is to me – an objective perspective. We all need to be humbled occasionally and I don’t believe in God so nature and the Universe provide that. Not to sound too pompous!”
The gentle flowing of the breeze through whispering leaves and fluttering cloth on branches around the circle, the scudding of white clouds across ever-changing skies, the drone of bees among heather, and voices which could have been raised at this place of worship through the ages and yet are distinctly Grawl!x too. This is a gentle sounding track, belying the strength needed to not only be oneself, but to truly accept and find joy there.
Formerly a solo project songwriter Maria Michael Machin has released four albums under the Grawl!x name – 2012’s ‘Good Grief’, 2014’s ‘Aye!’, 2018’s ‘Appendix’, and 2020’s ‘PEEPS’. Lush soundscapes provide the setting for explorations of grief and loss, platonic love, and identity all together building a catalogue of astonishing musicality, lyrical vulnerability, and arrestingly ethereal electro-dreampop.
