The debut collection from enigmatic artist Peace Tape is out now as a co-release between Reckless Yes and Komponist.
Across the 17 minutes of ‘Abstract Works’ both electronic and acoustic methods are manipulated to create an unsettling, unfamiliar, otherworldly sonic landscape for listeners to journey through. The pieces vary from melodic ambience to bursts of manipulated noise, each one offering an immersive experience of different emotions through detailed free-form soundscapes. Each of the seven pieces explore sound, emotion and a willing for the listener to immerse themselves within the listening experience.
There is no particular order in which ‘Abstract Works’ should be played. Like walking through a gallery, the listener is advised to take in the pieces in whichever way they feel like. Peace Tape is as loose with the music artform as it is with identity, sharing as much with modern art as it does traditional music. Two of the pieces are inspired directly by the modern artists they are named after (Lucio Fontana and Gerhard Richter).
This release is simply the first offering of an emerging and ongoing collection unrestrained by traditional formats or expectations – focused purely on the sound, wherever that may exist. It seeks to redefine the relationship to the listener and challenge the way we experience sound alongside our other senses. This is a boundary pushing project in every respect.
Signed to Reckless Yes it was a natural partnership with Komponist when we heard the release. The experimental soundscape was a great fit with their commitment to composers (as opposed to songwriters) and we knew their members would love it.
Reviewing Small Music Scene said, “You know what, for a project described as “abstract” that’s not meant to fall into one distinguishable category, they inadvertently produced a really effective horror soundtrack that gets under your skin and shakes you up.An interesting concoction overall, and if more like this is to come out of Komponist, then consider me hooked.”
