We’ve always loved words almost as much as we love music so today we are finally announcing a new part of Reckless Yes: Reckless Yes Publishing.
While Reckless Yes started out to put on gigs and make records we’ve always had one foot in publishing of some sort – Sarah as a journalist and editor, Pete as an award-winning playwright, together founding Derby’s independent culture website Storge.
And even before we were Reckless Yes we were both working on novels. It seemed an obvious choice to become and independent publisher and apply the ethos of Reckless Yes to the printed word, through a bit of DIY graft and magic.
We want to apply the DIY and community ethos of our music work to publishing. We think it strange that in music DIY and self-releasing now has little stigma, but is an legitimate artistic choice. In publishing we think the opposite is still mainly true – if you aren’t being picked up on an advances deal it must be because you aren’t good enough, rather than you making a creative choice to retain control of your work and directly act on getting it out there.
First off the presses will be Pentrich: The Last Uprising, a novel by Peter Darrington based on the true events of the Pentrich rebellion which took place in 1817. Following on from his award-winning play of the same events we’ll be publishing in eBook and paperback on the 200th anniversary of the uprising, 9 June 2017. Follow us on social media for updates on where to get your copy in either format.
We’re not currently accepting submissions but plan to open a window for others to send their work to us for consideration for short runs. We’re currently focused on novels of any genre from first time authors and our second release will be available later in the year.
